AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Department of Transportation announced it will open a new Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) in southwest Austin as part of safety and mobility improvements for the Oak Hill Parkway project, according to a press release.
SPUIs are a type of intersection that is designed to improve the safety and efficiency of large volumes of traffic by combining two intersections into one, reducing conflict points.
The new intersection will replace the “Y” in Oak Hill, a consistently congested area where U.S. Highway 290 and State Highway 71 diverge, becoming their own highways.
According to the release, the William Cannon Drive bypass bridge will also close to complete the flyovers between U.S. 290 and SH 71 and is estimated to reopen for westbound traffic in 2026.
Drivers are advised to use caution when driving through the work zone and follow road signs alerting them to new traffic patterns.
