AUSTIN (KXAN) — Repairs to a bridge on Interstate 35 in Georgetown will take around 4-5 weeks to complete after a truck crashed into it on Sept. 2, according to a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) spokesperson.
The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-35, and the truck struck the State Highway 29 overpass, KXAN reported last week.
This update comes after the family of Jonathon Scott Morgan hired an attorney to seek legal action against the truck company Austin Underground Incorporated, along with the driver, involved in the crash.
The personal injury lawsuit accused the driver of the truck, Alan Collins, was towing a construction excavator and hit the bridge, claimed it wasn’t properly secured and was too tall. After the crash, Morgan was struck by concrete when the bridge collapsed, according to the lawsuit.
KXAN viewer Brent Parks provided dashcam footage of the crash, which showed concrete falling after the truck hit the bridge.
“Just all of a sudden I saw concrete starting to rain down from the bridge,” Parks said. “I drove through the debris and the rubble and went around and called 911. I just really feel for the people that were one or two cars up in front of me.”
According to TxDOT, after the truck struck the bridge, it damaged some of the beams on the bridge. By Tuesday, TxDOT said two beams will be replaced, and there is currently not a timeline on that replacement.
Furthermore, TxDOT said the eastbound lanes of SH 29 will reopen once the repairs are complete.
