AUSTIN (KXAN) — As of Friday morning, Hurricane Humberto continues to strengthen and move northwest. Several hundred miles to the west of Humberto, Invest 94L (soon to be Imelda) is forecast to enter a favorable environment for tropical development in the next few days.
Hurricane Humberto is not expected to impact the U.S. and will move out to sea later next week.
Computer models suggest soon to be Imelda could impact parts of the Southeast U.S. East Coast early next week.
These tropical systems will not affect the Gulf or Texas.
In Depth: Why is the forecast so difficult?
We look at the steering pattern to determine the track of both of these tropical systems. A strong high pressure positioned in the Atlantic will steer Humberto clockwise out to sea. However, Bermuda needs to be prepared for hurricane impacts.
Invest 94L, on the other hand, has two main scenarios. An upper-level low and a stationary front positioned in the Southeast could steer the system into land as early as Monday or Tuesday.
This would deliver heavy rain, coastal flooding, and strong wind gusts to the Southeast U.S. East Coast. In this scenario, Imelda would need to move fast without interacting with Humberto.
There is also the possibility that Imelda is slower, which would pull the system away from the U.S. East Coast, as the Fujiwhara effect absorbs Imelda into Humberto.
Our atmosphere is complex, and there are several moving parts to the tropical forecast. The National Hurricane Center will continue to have forecast updates on Humberto and soon-to-be Imelda.
