Travis Co. Commissioners set to approve millions in child care funding

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Travis County Commissioners Court will vote Tuesday on two multi-million Workforce Solutions Capital Area contracts, which the commissioners say could bolster child care in the area.

It’s part of a county-wide push to put child care in reach for parents and caregivers who may not be able to afford it otherwise.

Travis County Judge Andy Brown, Travis County Commissioners, Workforce Solutions Capital Area and child care representatives scheduled a press conference ahead of the vote.

“The contracts will make a transformative $21+ million investment in Travis County’s child care infrastructure. They will expand child care scholarships and provide gap funding for sustained support,” reads a statement from the county.

The funding is made possible due to Travis County voters who overwhelmingly voted to approve a tax hike in November 2024 for affordable child care. The 2.5-cent property tax rate increase generates roughly $75 million.

KXAN previously reported that Travis County ranked number one in 2023 when it comes to costly care for children in the state.

At Tuesday’s press conference, county leaders will also announce the newly-appointed members of the Community Advisory Council to help guide investments. The council includes parents, youth, providers, policy experts and community leaders, according to the county.
