AUSTIN (KXAN) — With Buster Posey Award finalist Rylan Galvan likely headed to a professional team in next week’s MLB draft, Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle grabbed another finalist out of the transfer portal Monday.
Notre Dame’s Carson Tinney finished a tremendous sophomore season with the Fighting Irish, being named to two All-America first teams while bashing 17 home runs with an on-base plus slugging of 1.251. He said Monday via social media that he will transfer to Texas, giving Schlossnagle his catcher at least next season.
Galvan, Tinney and Coastal Carolina’s Caden Bodine are finalists for the Buster Posey Award, given to the best catcher in college baseball. The winner will be announced Thursday in Wichita, Kansas. Tinney has two years of eligibility remaining, but could be selected in next year’s MLB draft. If he can replicate the season he had with the Irish in 2025 with the Longhorns, then he’ll stand to make a lot of money with a big signing bonus.
Tinney is widely regarded as the best player in the transfer portal, and the Longhorns have been busy rebuilding their roster using it this offseason. Stanford shortstop Temo Becerra also committed to Texas, giving Schlossnagle some insurance if Jalin Flores decides to leave following the MLB draft. Becerra is a graduate transfer after spending four seasons with the Cardinal and had three 5-hit games in 2025. He started 51 of Stanford’s 52 games and hit .330 with an on-base percentage of .384.
