AUSTIN (KXAN) — One Central Texas Girl Scout is being recognized for her work to improve access to LGBTQ+ literature.
Girl Scouts of Central Texas recognized Norah S. with a Silver Award for her project creating the Little Rainbow Library. The library includes a “carefully curated selection of books that represent and celebrate the LGBTQ+ experience,” per a news release.
Norah’s middle school doesn’t feature an on-site library, which inspired her creation of the rainbow library, the release said. The included collection features graphic novels, stories and nonfiction books purchased from local Austin bookstores.
The Girl Scout Silver Award is among the highest awards available for a Girl Scout cadet and is used to commemorate their dedication to the betterment of their communities. Cadets in sixth, seventh or eighth grade can earn a Silver Award by creating a project — either on their own or through a team effort — that addresses issues in their community in a “meaningful and sustainable way,” the release said.
“I got the idea for my little rainbow library because my school is small and doesn’t have a full library. I wanted people at my school to feel included and accepted,” Norah said in an email to KXAN. “Having books that have LGBTQ characters in them is one way to help everyone feel included. I like seeing people take home the books! It’s also been fun to add new books to the collection when more are available.”
