AUSTIN (KXAN)— Overall wellness for athletes is a growing conversation. Olympic Gold medalist, Gabby Thomas, who lives in Austin weighed in on the topic at South by Southwest on Monday.
On the panel, “Fuel Incredible: Your Recipe for Peak Performance, Thomas and fellow Olympic Gold Medalist Caeleb Dressel talked about nutrition, emotional support, physical training, emotional health and more.
It’s a talk applauded by Julie Korioth, the creator of the app Nui Sport, which officially launched this year. Nui Sport is for younger athletes. Korioth is hoping competitors like Thomas and Dressel can help her mission to shine a light on mental health for younger competitors who are navigating managing the pressure.
While Dressel and Thomas aren’t involved with the app, other big name athletes are with the goal of focusing on mental wellness.
“It’s like they know that some of their favorite players have been through that very thing that they’ve been through,” Korioth said. “To know that they’re not alone.”
So far more than 200 young athletes are using the app, according to Korioth.
“It’s just important that we have them start working on their mental game so much earlier so they can learn to kind of withstand that pressure and that they’re feeling at a younger age,” she said.
Korioth said through the app she’s partnered with athletes at Huston-Tilitson University. Recently, Korioth connected with the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association to help with more actionable advocacy.
