AUSTIN (KXAN) — Saxx Williams has been running his taco/burger stand for less than two years out of the Texcoma gas station kitchen in southeast Austin.
After a SWAT incident on May 21, he was out of work for two weeks, forced to throw out food contaminated by toxins used by the SWAT team. The gas station was left with shattered glass, and is now boarded up after a standoff with a man police shot and killed.
As of Tuesday, the gas station is officially back open. The Austin Police Department is expected to release body camera footage of the incident this week.
Williams was there and witnessed everything that happened.
“I had just had a customer leave and I just cleaned up the grill, and I was standing right here and I heard a gunshot,” Williams said. “I was like wait a minute, that’s a gunshot inside the store!”
Williams recorded his exit from his kitchen, just in case anything happened to him.
In the video, you can hear the suspect, who police have identified as Alfonso Gonzalez, say to Williams — “Get out, bro!”
With a gun pointed at him, Williams said he ran out.
“He allowed me to get out,” Williams said. “I didn’t get the vibe from him that he wanted to hurt me at all.”
APD said officers spotted Gonzalez in a stolen car and followed him to the gas station.
There was a store manager inside, hiding in a locked office. That manager did make it out later, unharmed, according to police.
“As you can see, we are missing the entire front end of our building,” Williams said, showing KXAN the aftermath of the incident on Tuesday.
Williams has a GoFundMe, as he tries to recover and keep his business afloat. He said he has lost thousands of dollars worth of food and business.
“It was a random situation, the man didn’t come in here to rob us,” Williams said. “Whatever he was going on with life escalated…which is tragic.”
