As of October 2025, Round Rock has built over 20 miles of hike and bike trails and has a few projects underway. On Thursday, the Round Rock City Council approved moving forward with building the Northeast Downtown Phase 2 Trail Project.

“The end goal is connectivity,” said Rick Atkins, Round Rock’s Parks and Recreation Director. “We want to take a large community, and we want to make it smaller.”

New law requires 100-mile trail connecting State Capitol, Alamo to be completed by 2036

Atkins said he wants to make walking from Round Rock to neighboring cities, like Georgetown and Pflugerville, easier.

“Our residents and citizens want us to update that north-south connection and just the master plan,” Atkins said. “We’ve really got to look at those key destinations.”

Sally White lives in Round Rock and regularly uses the trails to stay active.

“This is kind of my second home here,” White said. “Over the years, I’ve seen more runners, more walkers.”

White said she welcomes the idea of expanding the trails and said that it will help promote people going outside.

“There’s no excuse for not going out because we are interconnected, and we can take advantage of all this expansion,” White said.

The City of Round Rock will host the first two open houses at these locations and times:

  • Oct. 15 at the Allen R. Baca Center
    • Address: 301 W. Bagdad Building 2
    • Time: 5 PM- 8 PM
  • Oct. 16 at the Bob Bennett Utilities and Transportation Building
    • Address: 3400 Sunrise Rd
    • Time: 5 PM- 8 PM
