AUSTIN (KXAN) — No one can accuse Westlake of not playing anybody in its nondistrict schedule.
For the third time in four games, the No. 13 Chaparrals (2-1) take on a ranked opponent, and this time, they’ll get to play the game at home. Westlake takes on No. 16 Cibolo Steele (3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, with the broadcast on KXAN.com and the KXAN+ smart TV app beginning at 6:50 p.m. You can also watch the game in the video player above.
Westlake turned in a great win on the road last week, topping Humble Atascocita 35-28 and sending them tumbling down the Class 6A rankings from No. 8 to No. 14. The Knights soundly beat San Antonio Brandeis 42-22 last week.
The Knights have a ground attack that averages more than 215 yards per game, led by senior running back Jonathan Hatton, who is punishing teams with about 150 yards per game and seven touchdowns. He averaged 7.2 yards per carry, gaining 448 yards on 62 attempts, so the Chaps will have to figure out a way to slow him down. Quarterback DJ Green hasn’t thrown an interception yet this season, but he’s only made 43 pass attempts in three games.
The Chaps can counter with a solid rushing attack behind the combination of sophomore Jarren Lopez and senior Sebastian Henault. Lopez is the smaller of the two who can slip in and out of creases made by the offensive line to break explosive runs. Henault, on the other hand, is a human battering ram who runs between the tackles violently, looking to make defenders scatter like bowling pins after a strike.
Henault leads the team with 171 yards on 31 carries, and Lopez has 165 yards on 35 attempts. Quarterback Rees Wise is also part of it, with three touchdowns on 23 attempts for 84 yards.
It’s the last nondistrict game for both squads. Westlake opens District 26-6A play next week against Akins, and the Knights begin District 29-6A play against Schertz Clemens.
