AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austinites who have been victims of family violence will soon have another option for affordable housing.
City leaders attended a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the future community, called The Sasha, which will be owned by The SAFE Alliance — an organization with a mission to end multigenerational cycles of abuse and violence. Construction on The Sasha, which is located in southeast Austin, will begin this spring and should be finished by 2027.
“This project is so important because there are too many survivors that cannot get safe and end up homeless because of a lack of housing,” said Julia Spann, the CEO of The SAFE Alliance. “We have an opportunity now to build housing for folks who’ve experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, maybe child abuse as kids, and we can begin to break that cycle by giving them a safe place wrapped with support services too long.”
The community will have one, two and three-bedroom units, consisting of both permanent and transition housing units.
“We’ll be able to serve a parent with multiple kids and then provide lots of services for their kids so they can learn about safe and healthy relationships,” Spann said.
