AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s a new school year for Lake Travis ISD but no new challenges, according to new Superintendent Curtis Null.
“I don’t see really the new school year as a challenge. See it as an opportunity. You know, we have 11,000 students that will grace the doors of our buildings next week, and with each of them comes a story and a future, and we have an opportunity to shape that future, and there is some pressure that comes with that, because we want to make sure that every child feels special each day, receives everything that they need. But I know that we have the right staff to make that happen,” Null said.
While some district leaders are concerned about enrollment and growth, Null sees it as a chance to take care of children who are enrolled.
“The voters here in Lake Travis are very forward thinking, approving bonds in 2022 and 2023. We’re seeing the fruits of that work now showing up on our campuses. As we’ve expanded campuses, we’re under construction, which brings its own challenges, but we know that growth is a positive thing. People want to be here. They want to raise their families here in Lake Travis,” Null explained.
“And we want to welcome them with open arms, and so every new child moving in, we want parents to know that we have a place for them, and we’re going to make sure that they’re well taken care of, and we’re looking forward to educating them,” he added.
Cellphone ban
While school districts statewide implement the new cellphone ban on all campuses, Null explained Lake Travis ISD has been one step ahead.
“The goal of this is really to give kids an opportunity to be learners while they’re in school, to take away that distraction at the same time,” Null said.
“Last year, we implemented a similar cellphone ban in our elementary and middle school campuses. So, this year, we’ve just rolled that same plan to our high schools,” he said. “We’ve proven that we can implement that plan with fidelity, and it’s been a positive experience for our kids and for our teachers in the K through eight, and now we’ll just advance it to our high school, and we’re confident that it will go well.”
