New bicycle traffic garden opens at east Austin park

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Parks Foundation, Austin Parks and Recreation and Amigos de Parque Zaragoza announced the completion of a brand new bicycle traffic garden at Parque Zaragoza, located at 2608 Gonzales Street.

“This scaled-down street network … will enable children and new riders to practice biking and road safety in a car-free space,” organizers said.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday for the space, which is open to the public. New benches, picnic tables, accessible walkways and ramps, as well as games and activities painted onto the parking lot were also on display.

“This project represents our community’s commitment to improving Austin’s green spaces in a way that benefits all park users by transforming unused space at Parque Zaragoza into a vibrant learning environment with expanded recreation activities and amenities,” said Colin Wallis, CEO of Austin Parks Foundation.
