AUSTIN (KXAN) — In honor of American Indian Heritage Day, the Native American Cultural Center opened its doors to the public Saturday with an official grand opening and open house.
The event was in partnership with the Native American and Indigenous Education program in Austin ISD.
This was not the first time Austin has celebrated American Indian Heritage Day. Last year, the Bullock Texas State History Museum, alongside local non-profit Great Promise for American Indians, put on an event to allow people to learn about Native Americans.
The Native American Cultural Center will be at the former Brooke Elementary School Campus in District 2.
The event begins at noon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and will run until 2 p.m.
Several city leaders will be at the event, including Travis County Judge Andy Brown, City Councilmember José Valesquez, and Austin ISD board members.
