AUSTIN (KXAN) — MAS Cultura, a local organization that ensures to connect the Latino community with resources that inspire, is hosting a plethora of Latin inspired celebrations for the Austin community.
MAS Cultura or ‘Music, Art and Soul Culture,’ is a nonprofit organization based in Austin founded in 2021 by Monica Maldonado. The organization was created to empower and advocate for Latinos.
“Our mission is to advance the cultura through empowering Latino art, artists and ideas. We are here for the Latino community and we really just want to see everyone advancing and thriving,” Maldonado said.
Maldonado, the daughter of a single immigrant mother, created the organization because she knew firsthand the difficulties Latinos face as they maneuver through life while representing both Hispanic and American heritages.
Maldonado knew art was a major part of Hispanic culture, she created MAS Cultura to bridge the gap Latino’s face when trying to follow their dreams and expand opportunities to anyone who seeks them.
MAS Culture consists of a big team and family that works together to make sure each and every event runs smoothly and provides the community with the resources they seek.
Julio Herrera is an artist and is the man behind the programs organization. “It could be art gallery’s, toy drives, thanksgiving dinners… I try to be the person that I wish I had when I was a kid,” said Herrera.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, Mas Cultura has been celebrating by hosting events for the Austin community and highlighting the legacy local Latinos have created.

MAS Cultura’s next event is called ‘Rep your País’ it will be held on Sep. 28 at RichesArt Gallery at 6 p.m. The event will feature music, food, vendors and more Latino inspired culture and fun.
On Nov. 30, MAS Cultura is hosting J. Colunga’s 16 annual Car Show. The event will feature a Lowrider car show, a zoot suit contest, live music, a Wepa contest and more.
“Wepa is the biggest trend happening right now, it originated in Puerto Rico. It is a dance technique, a combination of cumbia tippy toes, fashion, it is a whole vibe,” Maldonado said.
