AUSTIN (KXAN) — Voters in Austin overwhelmingly rejected Prop Q Tuesday — a proposed tax rate hike that some city leaders said would pay for “core services” including parks, public safety programs, public health and tackling homelessness.

Almost 172,000 people cast a ballot, with about 63.5% voting against the proposition.

Outside of a handful of precincts in which very few votes were cast, the strongest opposition to Prop Q was in western parts of the city. In nine precincts, more than 85% of people voted against the measure, primarily west of MoPac Expressway.

In Travis County Precinct 353, which includes portions of the city near Barton Creek, 91.6% of votes cast in the race were against Prop Q.

On the opposite end, the areas that saw the greatest support were in central Austin, particularly in and around the University of Texas. Travis County Precincts 312 and 315, which cover parts on campus and areas just north of UT, both had more than 80% of voters cast their ballot in favor of Prop Q.

Austin’s city limits are split among three counties: Travis, Williamson and Hays. Prop Q failed in all three. In Travis County, where the vast majority of Austin’s registered voters live, 63.3% of votes were cast against Prop Q. In Williamson County, 67.2% of the votes were against, while 72.2% were against in Hays County.
