AUSTIN (KXAN) — Former Texas standout Eliot Spizzirri picked up a win in his first match in the men’s singles main draw Sunday at the US Open in Queens, New York.
Spizzirri, a two-time ITA collegiate player of the year for the Longhorns in 2023 and 2024, beat Stefan Dostanic in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), moving to the second round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Spizzirri had eight fewer winners than Dostanic at 39-31, but kept the unforced errors to a relative minimum, committing 27 for Dostanic’s 36. Spizzirri won 129 total points to Dostanic’s 113. Spizzirri held a big advantage in serve receive points won, converting 51 of 123 tries. Dostanic was 41-for-119.
Spizzirri will face 32nd-seeded Luciano Darderi of Italy in the second round. Darderi eased through his opening match over Australia’s Rinky Hijikata 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 127 in the ATP world rankings, Spizzirri has won his opening-round match at every Grand Slam event he’s played in this season, but has yet to make it out of the second round. He won a Challenger Tour event in San Diego in February and made the finals at the tour stop in Cleveland in January.
On the women’s side, former Texas player Lulu Sun won in the first round over Colombia’s Camila Osorio 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. Sun, who represents New Zealand, will face either 19th-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium or American Alyssa Ahn in the second round Wednesday. Another Longhorn, Peyton Stearns, opens play Monday.
