Longhorns hold at No. 7 after San Jose State win in AP Top 25

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas held at No. 7 in the Week 3 Associated Press Top 25 poll following a 38-7 win over San Jose State on Saturday.

Unless the teams above the Longhorns lose, don’t expect much of a rise in the rankings until Southeastern Conference play begins. With two Group of Five teams left on the nonconference schedule before opening the SEC slate with Florida on Oct. 4, even big wins over UTEP and Sam Houston most likely won’t move the needle for voters.

The second week of the college football season was stuffed full of blowouts, with a couple of upsets along the way. South Florida’s 18-16 win over previously No. 13 Florida launched the Bulls into the poll at No. 18, and Mississippi State took out former No. 12 Arizona State 24-20. The losses knocked the Gators and Sun Devils out of the rankings and into the others receiving votes category.

Oregon moved into the top five to No. 4 on the heels of a 69-3 demolition of Oklahoma State, and despite winning, Georgia dropped two spots to No. 6. The Bulldogs had a rather unimpressive 28-6 win over FCS program Austin Peay, and the voters reacted accordingly.

Ohio State remained at the top after a 70-0 drubbing of Gambling State. Penn State held at No. 2 with a 34-0 shutout over Florida International.
