AUSTIN (KXAN) — Boerne Little League made quite a statement in its opening game at the Little League World Series on Thursday in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Representing the Southwest region in the tournament, Boerne exploded for six runs in the fifth inning to run away from the Mid-Atlantic region team from Newtown, Pennsylvania 9-0 to advance in the winner’s bracket.

Kole Newsom hit a grand slam to highlight the big inning for Boerne, turning a 4-0 lead into 8-0, and then Doc Mogford crushed a solo homer over the left field wall to make it 9-0. Caden Guffey hit a line drive over the wall for a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Julian Hurst pitched four innings for Boerne and struck out 10 without allowing a hit. He also had three hits from the leadoff spot. Guffey started the game and pitched two innings, allowing two hits.
Boerne will play the winner of Friday’s game between the Northwest region (Puyallup, Washington) and Southeast region (Lake Mary, Florida) at 6 p.m. CDT, Monday.
