AUSTIN (KXAN) — A few weeks ago, we had a discussion with the Zac Foundation about how to keep your children safe during the swimming season.
We are revisiting the subject, but talking more about children with autism and how to keep them safe so they can enjoy the water.
Rich Segal spoke with Eileen Lamb, a mother of three children, two of whom are autistic. She started the conversation by citing a very alarming statistic. Children with autism are 40 times more likely to die from accidental drownings. She also cited another concerning number: 22 children in Texas have died in drownings so far in 2025.
One of the things she stressed during the interview was to find the right inclusive lessons and the right fit for your child. It’s important, she feels, to start as early as possible.
Eyes should be on the child at all times while they’re enjoying the pool or other bodies of water. Safeguard measures like double locks on entrances to the pool are also important.
The bottom line? Better safe than sorry.
Lamb is also the director of social media for Autism Speaks. She said the organization has valuable resources available for parents needing additional information.
