AUSTIN (KXAN) — When former Liberty Hill head coach Kent Walker left the program to take over in Blanco, folks wondered if the Panthers would still be committed to their signature Slot-T offense.
No need to wonder. New head coach David Seaborn loves it, too.
The Panthers (1-2) head to The Pfield for the District 15-5A2 opener with Pflugerville Connally (2-1) in Thursday’s KBVO Game of the Week. Liberty Hill picked up its first win of the season last week, 33-20 over El Paso Eastlake, and the Cougars beat Bryan Rudder 35-24.
Liberty Hill ran 61 plays against Eastlake, and as a shock to no one familiar with the program’s style, all were runs. Senior Bryce Muchaw chewed up the most yardage, running for 176 yards on 22 carries with a pair of touchdowns, to lead the way. The Panthers gained 372 yards on the ground, including a 52-yard touchdown run by DJ Seaborn as the longest play of the game.
For the Cougars, they’re led by their dynamic quarterback, junior Jase Watkins. He threw for 158 yards and ran for 133 in the win over Rudder, scoring twice on the ground. Connally ran for 240 yards on 36 carries against the Rangers.
Watkins hit Rashaan Franklin, a sophomore wide receiver, eight times for 81 yards, and Josh Whitehead added 53 rushing yards on eight carries with a touchdown. Taj Gaddy also scored on the ground.
Roger Wallace, Keith Moreland and LeVon Whittaker will be on the call for the game. You can watch it live on KBVO, or catch the replay at 10:30 a.m. Sunday on KXAN+, our smart TV streaming app.
