AUSTIN (KXAN) — If Hutto and Vista Ridge want to make sure their respective seasons continue past district play, Thursday’s showdown at Gupton Stadium is of utmost importance to them both.
The Hippos and Rangers meet at 7:30 p.m. in the KBVO Game of the Week, and with two weeks left in the regular season, this win means everything when it comes to postseason play. The Rangers are in a three-way tie for third at 4-2 with Round Rock and McNeil, and with only four playoff spots available, they have to get out of a tiebreaker scenario to ensure making it to the bi-district championship.

Hutto dropped its first district game last week to Vandegrift, so the Hippos and Vipers are tied atop the standings at 5-1. They have a little bit more leeway when it comes to punching a playoff ticket with another loss, but why risk it?
The Hippos have all kinds of offensive firepower under first-year head coach Eli Reinhart, starting with junior wide receiver Jaiden Fields. He averages 122.1 receiving yards per game this season, amassing 977 yards on 62 catches with 13 touchdowns, and he has a stack of FBS scholarship offers. The guy getting the ball to him, quarterback Kaden Stefek, has completed 60% of his passes for 2,214 yards and 27 touchdowns against seven interceptions.
Running back Kellen Chavies is a force in both the rushing and passing games, running for 645 yards while receiving for 345. He has 10 total touchdowns. Wide receiver Dylan Owens has 699 receiving yards on 34 grabs with eight touchdowns.
Vista Ridge had to switch quarterbacks midstream after Kaden Arnot went down with an injury, but Cameron Lacek has stepped in nicely. He’s thrown for 1,214 yards in seven games for 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Quinn Szczytowski has 666 rushing yards on 97 carries with seven touchdowns.
