AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was convicted by a jury in Travis County and sentenced in connection with a January 2023 murder that occurred at an east Austin gas station.
The murder charge against 27-year-old Yaseen Naz was related to the death of 42-year-old Marquis Lavar Demps, who was shot following an altercation.
Naz was given a 5-year prison sentence, which will be served in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
During Naz’s trial, the jury found “sufficient evidence of sudden passion,” according to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.
“Our office is grateful to our dedicated staff and law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the victim and his family,” said Travis County DA José Garza. “We hope this verdict continues to help the victim’s family with their healing journey.”
