JARRELL, Texas (KXAN) 一 The City of Jarrell will hold a vote Tuesday evening that would advance plans for a proposed data center.
The vote would determine if the 151-acre plot of land could be designated for the data center by rezoning it for light industrial use.
A public hearing on the plans will commence at 7 p.m. in Jarrell City Hall. Jarrell City Council will vote after the hearing.
This comes after the Jarrell Planning and Zoning Commission in August recommended the approval of the data center on land located next to Jarrell High School, as shown by Williamson County documents.
Jarrell residents have expressed concern, arguing that the facility’s location next to Jarrell High School may cause issues.
“While we understand the need for technological expansion and economic growth, placing such a large industrial project near schools and homes is not the solution,” Jarrell resident Stacey Holman wrote in an online petition. “Data centers, with their continuous operation and high demand for resources, can undermine the peaceful and safe conditions that our community has come to cherish.”
Homan added building a data center so close to Jarrell High School would, “introduce constant noise pollution, heavy truck traffic, and significant water and power consumption,” which would jeopardize the health and safety of local students, she wrote in the petition.
