AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new phase of I-35 construction in downtown Austin is starting. The I-35 Capital Express Central project is already underway at Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, and today the Texas Department of Transportation announced it’s starting the next phase by Lady Bird Lake.
Drivers will soon notice changes along I-35 from Holly Street to the intersection of I-35 and Hwy 71 down south, as TxDOT constructs two high-occupancy-vehicle lanes.

The I-35 CapEx Central project will also reconstruct the Lady Bird Lake bridge, construct a single-point urban interchange at Riverside Drive and a pedestrian-only bridge at Woodland Ave. The interchange at Riverside Dr will accommodate future Capital Metro light rail routes. There will also be improvements to bicycle and pedestrian paths along the I-35 corridor through Austin.

The plan also includes sinking the main lanes of I-35 through downtown and adding what’s called Cap and Stitch above the highway that will essentially cover I-35 with park space. The funding for that plan is still in the works.
The public won’t see significant impacts or lane closures around Lady Bird Lake for a few more months.
