AUSTIN (KXAN) — Dallas pop punk band Van Full of Nuns and Bowling for Soup are performing free shows at Longhorn City Limits Saturday ahead of the Longhorns game against Sam Houston State University.
The shows will be on the LBJ Lawn starting at 3:30 p.m. and are part of a growing tradition of free concerts before University of Texas football games. Van Full of Nuns is known for energetic performances and nostalgic pop-punk original music and covers.
“We didn’t realize how big of an event this was,” said Van Full of Nuns guitarist Josh Koder. “We didn’t realize how much the community got involved before the show to do the tailgating aspect. The idea of this free concert out in the LBJ Lawn, like, what a cool experience that the crowd gets to do.”
Van Full of Nuns has a history of performing with big-name bands, including Less Than Jake and New Found Glory. And this won’t be their first time sharing the stage with Bowling for Soup.
“It’s been a fun, fun journey with what we’ve gotten to do,” Koder said.
The band’s name originated from a humorous incident involving an actual van full of nuns that inspired them during their early days. “We were like, ‘Oh, that’s going to be a funny band name one day,'” Koder explained.
Van Full of Nuns plays original songs and some covers, mostly late-’90s and early 2000s punk like Green Day and Blink-182. Fans say their concerts pure nostalgia.
“We try to recreate that. It’s a party,” Koder added.
Van Full of Nuns is also known for hosting the Pop Punk’s Not Dead Fest at Buck’s Backyard in Buda, which has grown significantly over the years, showcasing both old school and new pop punk bands.
With their upcoming performance at Longhorn City Limits, Van Full of Nuns is excited to showcase their work, which is on Spotify, Apple Music and more.
The next Longhorn City Limits is scheduled for October 11 as Texas takes on Oklahoma.
