SAN MARCOS (KXAN) — Hays County Sheriff’s Office said it has a juvenile in custody after a firearm with a defaced serial number was found in the teen’s possession on campus.
HCSO said Hays CISD was notified after a Hays High School student reported hearing from a peer that the teen had a firearm. The juvenile suspect was detained by Hays County School Resource Officers (SROs).
High school staff and SROs started an investigation which led to the discovery of the 15-year-old boy in possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, according to a press release.
HCSO said the teen was taken to Hays County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with:
- Unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place, a second-degree felony
- Exhibiting or using a firearm at a school or on a bus, a third-degree felony
- Unlawful carrying of a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor
- Tampering with identification numbers, a Class A misdemeanor
The juvenile’s identity is being withheld.
In a letter home to parents, the principal of Hays High School described the detained student as a sophomore. It went on to say “Guns at school are not allowed for any reason. I share in your concern, distress, and aggravation that this has occurred at our school.”
“We do not yet know the specific reason this student brought a weapon on campus, but we are grateful for the swift action of peers who reported it, campus staff who immediately acted upon the information, and for the school resource officers (SROs) who quickly eliminated any potential threat to our safety,” said the principal.
