AUSTIN (KXAN) — With Halloween just over a week away, homes and businesses throughout the Austin area have been decorating for the occasion. To spread the spooky spirit, we pay homage to some must-see, dazzling displays around the KXAN viewing area.
South Austin: Haunted Trail
Jeremy Sexton started decorating the trail by his south Austin house five Halloweens ago.
Now fondly called “Haunted Trail,” the decor spectacle has become a community tradition and continues to scale year after year.
“There’s no big budget, no sponsors — just creativity, teamwork, and a love for seeing kids light up when they step into another world,” Sexton said.
With construction of a haunted house underway, Sexton invites the community to experience what he hopes will be the Haunted Trail’s spookiest Halloween yet.
“Come for the candy, stay for the photo-op, and get lost in the Halloween spirit we’ve poured our hearts into. We hope everyone who walks the trail feels a little of that old-school Halloween wonder,” Sexton said.
The Haunted Trail will be open for two nights, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, at 8110 Mauai Dr.
Plum Creek: The (Haunted) Gingerbread House in Kyle
An elaborate Halloween display is also on view at 285 McGarity in Kyle.
The Gingerbread House in Kyle was started in 2020 when Kristine Lilly decorated the exterior of her home to mimic a real-life gingerbread house.
This year, the Gingerbread House in Kyle is decked out in festive decor for Halloween. A Facebook post by Kyle Foodies shows larger-than-life skeletons, spiders, jack-o-lanterns and a variety of colorful lights on the home’s exterior.
The operation is open for viewing daily, with lights and music coming on at 7 p.m.
On Fridays and Saturdays, a variety of baked goods and candles are sold at the “Front Porch Store” from 7-9 p.m.
The Gingerbread House in Kyle is also looking to give back to the community through their spooky spectacular this month. A post directs anyone stopping by the free display to leave food donations for the Hays County Food Bank in front of the Grim Reaper Rock Band stage.
Northwest Austin: Barrington Way’s Zombie Prom
Each Halloween, residents on Barrington Way decorate their homes and yards for the occasion.
One home opens an annual haunted house to the community, and this year’s theme is Zombie Prom.
According to the Barrington Halloween Facebook page, visitors will be allowed into the haunted house at 11306 Barrington Way beginning at 6 p.m. on Halloween night.
