AUSTIN (KXAN) — Groups banded together on Thursday at the Hays County Courthouse, demanding the reinstatement of Texas State professor Dr. Thomas Alter, who was fired after his statements he made at a conference earlier this month.
Alter was accused of “inciting violence in a video of him speaking at a socialism conference posted on social media,” according to The Texas Tribune.
Those who participated in Thursday’s rally argued the university did not give Alter a chance to respond before firing him.
KXAN reached out to the university for a statement in reference to the rally, and a spokesperson said the following:
“As per university policy, Texas State does not discuss personnel matters.”
The university fired Alter on Sept. 10. KXAN reported that Alter filed a lawsuit last week against the university, saying the school’s administration breached its contract with him and retaliated against him for protected speech for political reasons.
“Freedom of speech doesn’t mean agreement, but it means the right to disagree. And once free speech is gone, we lose freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of due process, freedom of religion — this is what’s at stake,” Alter told KXAN.
