ELGIN, Texas (KXAN) — The Elgin Independent School District is hosting a job fair Wednesday afternoon to help fill teacher vacancies as the district continues to grow in size. The school district is adding two new elementary schools in the next two school years.
Elgin ISD Board of Trustees recently raised salaries by 3% across the district and approved raising the starting salary for teachers to $55,760. The district’s Assistant Superintendent on Human Capital, Al A. Rodriguez, said the increase is going to be a big help with recruitment and retention.
“Salary is obviously very important for any position, and I have to commend our school board because they’ve always been so supportive of us. We were able to do that without passing a deficit budget, which many of the districts around us are doing,” Rodriguez explained.
Rodriguez said the district is looking to make the deal even sweeter by lowering the cost for health insurance premiums for its staff. That could be passed by the board at its next meeting.
Harvest Ridge Elementary is set to open in the fall of 2024 in a brand new subdivision. Rodriguez said they are still trying to fill about half a dozen of the vacancies in this new school. The district has already broken ground on Trinity Ranch Elementary and will open that in the fall of 2025.
What you need to know about the job fair
The job fair is from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Elgin Middle School.
Rodriguez said the district has already received a good amount of RSVPs from people planning to attend the event, but said anyone is welcome to come in if they are interested in a profession in education.
You will need to bring a resume and be ready to speak with multiple principals from different schools.
