Early Voting: What does it take to run an election in Travis County?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Early voting for the Nov. 4 election starts Monday across Central Texas.

On the ballot, Texans can expect to vote on 17 proposed amendments to the state constitution, including parental rights and property tax exemptions. Some local cities and school districts have races on the ballot, too.

Starting at 7 a.m., voters in Travis County can head to one of the 37 early voting polling locations to cast their ballot. But the process to get local elections up and running starts months in advance.

Ahead of the election, Travis County Clerk Dyana Limon-Mercado opened up the county’s elections headquarters to KXAN to show what it takes to ensure a secure, accurate, and efficient election.

“It’s important for voters to know any individual voter may only vote every four years in the presidential election or every other November in the gubernatorial election, but this team is running anywhere from two to seven elections a year,” Limon-Mercado said.

The elections office employs over 1,200 staff and poll workers. Internal workers help answer calls, process mail ballots, and prepare testing equipment. Poll workers assist voters during early voting and election day at locations across the county, according to the County Clerk’s office.

“This work is about teamwork, transparency, and trust,” Limon-Mercado in a statement.
“From the people answering voter calls to those testing equipment and managing ballots, every
step is carefully designed to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that every eligible
voter can participate.”

Early voting runs from Monday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 31. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
