DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas (KXAN) — A housing organization gifted $50,000 to a Dripping Springs nonprofit group to aid in its ongoing efforts to rehome families displaced from a mobile home community.
On July 29, around 30 families in the Gateway Estates Community said they got a letter informing them they had 60 days to move their homes and belongings or items remaining could be considered abandoned. Since that initial letter was delivered to neighbors, a member of the nonprofit said the developer has been flexible with families, offering extensions if needed.
“A lot of the [families] have been here for 25 years,” said Chris Kelker-Newlan, who works for Dripping Springs nonprofit Hometown Missions.
Many families want to stay in Dripping Springs so children can continue to attend school in its school district.
“There’s over 100 residents here. [A lot of them], about 60 of them, are in the school district,” he continued. “They just didn’t have the means to find another place to transition to new homes in Central Texas.”
Capital Area Housing Finance Corporation provided the donation to Gateway for Hope, the coalition of nonprofits that have come together to help the families relocate.
“Moving a mobile home, it takes money,” Kelker-Newlan said.
The money will go toward moving costs and the temporary accommodation needed until families can find a permanent solution.
“There’s a myriad of things that the funds will be used for,” Kelker-Newlan said. “We will advise them to ensure they make good financial [decisions] so the money is well spent wisely and used to help them find their new place of living.”
“The generous contribution that happened here today will help these folks transition as smoothly as possible,” he added.
KXAN is waiting to talk to the developer. Once we hear back, we will update this article.
