AUSTIN (KXAN) — Comedian Leo González, widely known for his skits impersonating news anchors and reporters, visited the KXAN studio Friday.
González is in Austin for four shows he’s doing at Cap City Comedy Club this weekend. Ahead of his shows, he took a stab at reporting on one of Austin’s most contentious topics: traffic. And he had a… unique perspective on it.
González found fame about five years ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he started posting comedic sketches online. A lot of his videos poked fun at the mannerisms of broadcast TV journalists. He was working at a news station in Reno at the time.
He said stand-up comedy wasn’t necessarily his plan, but he always loved it and when he started posting skits online and they took off, he figured he’d try to start meeting some of the comedians he loved, and the rest is history.
González joked, “I think rent was just due,” though, when he was asked if he always wanted to be a stand-up comedian.
González has tried his hand at weather forecasting in the past, but traffic anchor Erica Brennes showed him the ropes of traffic reporting when he visited KXAN.
“Erica, is it me, or has this I-35 construction… has it been a while?” he asked. Brennes replied, “It’s been a while, and it’s not going to be done for another decade or so.”
“I say that about myself,” González quipped. “You know, we’re always kinda working on ourselves, too… a note to my ex.”
While looking at the drive times Friday morning, González paused and offered a poignant assessment.
“I wanna say something about traffic. Traffic is what you make of it. I wouldn’t so much worry about these numbers,” González said. “Just get there, it doesn’t matter.”
González also questioned the severity of Austin traffic, with Brennes warning him that what he said was “fighting words.”
“I hear that you guys really think that there’s a lot of traffic here. Have you been to Dallas? Have you been to Houston? That’s traffic.”
González also said he wants to have a discussion with the city of Pflugerville on spelling.
