AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Thursday, Austin City Council made steps to fight human trafficking in the city.
Council member Mackenzie Kelly held a news conference to highlight those efforts and key initiatives.
Members unanimously passed a resolution to create new public awareness campaigns, focus on preventative measures, secure more resources for law enforcement and specifically direct the city manager to fight human trafficking.
It also enhances victim services and paves the way to establish safe havens for trafficking survivors.
“Human trafficking recognizes no boundaries. it preys upon the most vulnerable in our community and deprives individuals of their inherent freedoms, dignity and human rights. However, with the passage of this resolution, we echo a powerful message: human trafficking has no place in Austin. Not under our vigilant watch,” Kelly said.
