This is to help minimize the fire risk at the city’s parks, greenbelts and preserves, according to the city. The restriction includes the use of charcoal barbecue pits, grills and smokers. The city said propane stoves are only allowed “in designated picnic areas.”

“As a general reminder, smoking is always prohibited in City of Austin parks,” the city said.

The city warned that those who violate the burn restriction could face a fine between $300-$500. The parks and recreation department said it will “continue to evaluated fire conditions and will lift the burning restriction as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Jonathan Wright, a wildfire mitigation specialist with Austin Fire, said even a small ember that is dragged from chains or a tossed-out cigarette butt is all it takes to start a fire.
