AUSTIN (KXAN) — On a night that began with the jersey retirement of a Westlake legend, Lake Travis went into Chaparral Stadium and stole the show.
The No. 4 Cavaliers snapped the No. 8 Chaparrals’ 6-game Battle of the Lakes winning streak, 31-10, after Westlake retired Drew Brees’ No. 15 in a pregame ceremony on Friday.
The Cavaliers controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, creating running lanes for tailback Vann Hopping and giving quarterback Luke McBride plenty of time to throw. On the defensive side, Carter Buck and company were all over Westlake quarterback Rees Wise for most of the night.
Before he left the game with an injury with 8:28 left in the third quarter, Hopping rushed for 149 yards with two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. He scored the first touchdown of the game on a 20-yard run, and then hauled in an 18-yard pass from McBride late in the second quarter.
McBride threw three touchdown passes, two to Westin Smith for 48 and 38 yards in the second half. Wise tossed a 13-year scoring pass to Braden Riddell just before the halftime horn.
Lake Travis led 13-7 at halftime.
Westlake forced two Cavalier turnovers early in the game, but couldn’t do anything with them to seize control. Thompson Bennett picked off McBride in the first quarter, and then Pasquale Maurici forced McBride to fumble and then recovered it, but the Cavs’ defense stood strong all night long.
Westlake (6-2, 3-1) had won eight of the last nine matchups against the Cavaliers (8-0, 4-0). Lake Travis now sits alone at the top of District 26-6A with two weeks left in the regular season.
The Chaps take on Del Valle, and the Cavs face Akins in district play on Halloween.
