AUSTIN (KXAN) — After seven years in Austin, the U.S. Army Futures Command (AFC) is preparing for a major change. The command, which has been headquartered downtown since 2018, will officially deactivate this week, with a new organization taking its place.
A ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 2, at the LBJ Auditorium on the University of Texas campus. The event will mark the end of AFC and the activation of the new Transformation and Training Command.
The change follows an order by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on April 30, it aims to divest “outdated, redundant and inefficient programs.”
Army officials said the new command is designed to continue the work of the Future Command, preparing soldiers and the Joint Force for rapidly evolving forms of warfare. In a press release, the Army described AFC as “a critical force in Army and Joint Force transformation” that helped ensure the service remained ready for future conflicts.
As previously reported by KXAN, AFC’s mission has been to adapt to changing battlefields through technology, research, and integration with private industry.
The new Transformation and Training Command will carry that effort forward with an added focus on soldier training and readiness.
