Austin Water asking customers to conserve water Friday

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Water is asking customers to in southwest Austin to conserve water on Friday.

The interactive map provided by Austin Water shows a large area that will be impacted.

“There is a small leak at the joints,” said Randi Jenkins, assistant director of customer experience with Austin Water. “If it is not addressed, it becomes a worse leak and so taking care of this now on a large water main is a priority for us.”

Austin Water crews will be out on Friday morning to repair the 48-inch line, but that could mean some customers see less water pressure or they could experience service delays.

“The major thing we are asking the community to do in the southwest area of Austin is to conserve water,” said Jenkins.

The repair is estimated to take up to 12 hours but could exceed that.

“Like anything field conditions can change at any given moment with any type of construction, but we are not anticipating anything like that,” Jenkins said. “Other than the water line being very large, it is a routine water line repair.”

Austin Water said, “Residents and businesses can help during this repair by limiting consumption to only essential water use. This includes refraining from outdoor watering, power washing, and washing cars; turning off irrigation systems; and postponing washing clothes and dishes.”

Reservoirs are being filled to capacity in southwest Austin before repairs begin.

Austin Water is also asking people in the affected area to store water– 1 gallon per person per day, no later than Thursday.

Austin Water said they will have a water distribution site at Bowie High school while the work is being done. If anyone needs water they can stop by for assistance starting at 7 a.m.

This repair work also will impact three of Austin Water’s wholesale customers: Shady Hollow, High Valley Water Supply Corporation and Mid-Tex Utility.
