AUSTIN (KXAN) — As thousands of people attend South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, emergency officials want to ensure they’re prepared for anything.
Special event staff are set to prepare units and depart from Austin-Travis County Emergency Services (ATCEMS) headquarters on Wednesday afternoon.
Crews deployed to a patient collection point, which is the base of operations for the spring festival. It functions as a field hospital.
KXAN and other media outlets have been invited to see internal operations and the set up.
According to ATCEMS, there’s a mixture of special response units, motorcycles, ambulances. There’s also a dedicated team to call responders out to areas where people need help.
ATCEMS said it’s something that’s needed to minimize the impact of a big event like SXSW to the city.
If you wind up needing medical help, ATCEMS will bring you to a tent, where there will be paramedics and a doctor, and then you’ll be taken to the hospital from there if needed.
“The safety precautions taken by EMS here in south by is the same as previous years,” ATCEMS Commander of Special Events, Ricardo Aguilar said. “We keep a very robust safety plan that we met, that we pass on to all of our crews to follow down here during south by southwest.”
