AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin student was arrested Thursday after a report of a weapon on campus led officers to discover two guns at a high school.
Students at Northeast Early College High School and International High School were placed on hold twice during the school day, according to a letter sent to families from the schools’ principals. Those schools share a campus at 7104 Berkman Drive in northeast Austin.
During a hold, students and staffs continue with the school day but remain inside their classrooms, according to Austin Independent School District’s website.
Officers found the student “who was in possession of two unloaded firearms” during the first 10-minute hold. The second hold, prompted by another report of a weapon on campus, also lasted 10 minutes, and officers did not find anything.
The principals encouraged people “if you see something, say something” and directed the school community to report “suspicious behavior of any kind” to Austin ISD police at 512-414-1703.
“I want to commend the individuals who made the reports and our officers who acted quickly to
ensure the safety of our campus,” Principals Leticia Vega and Nathan Neal wrote.
