Austin music scene field guide book out now, proceeds going right back to local musicians

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Music fans can now officially flip through the pages of a recently released field guide to Austin’s lively music scene.

The book, “Austin’s Music Scene: Your Guide to the City’s Most Iconic Artists & Venues,” created by Thunderhouse Media and the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), is out now. The two organizations created the book to mark HAAM’s 20th anniversary. Half of all proceeds from its sales will benefit HAAM.

1st comprehensive field guide on Austin music scene being released this fall, benefitting HAAM

Mitch Baranowski, founder and chief creative officer of Thunderhouse Media Group, said he hoped it’d be the first of many editions that’ll chronicle Austin’s music scene to stay up-to-date with the ever-evolving “Live Music Capital of the World.”

“What we set out to create is a real love letter to the scene today,” Baranowski said. “I went to journalism school here at UT many moons ago and fell in love with the live music scene, and I’ve never fallen out of love with it, so when we had a chance to partner with HAAM for the 20th anniversary, we wanted to do something really special.”

The guidebook is 222 pages and was put together by a creative team of about 10 people over the course of nine or so months, Baranowski said. It includes exclusive artist interviews, behind-the-scenes insights, and hand-drawn maps of music venues — as well as bonus content online — and it features around more than 160 artists across seven genres.

According to Thunderhouse, this is the first comprehensive field guide dedicated to Austin’s contemporary music scene. Many books out there chronicle individual Austin musicians and the historical development of the music scene, but Thunderhouse said this guidebook will fill a gap where there hasn’t been something capturing the “diversity, vibrancy, and resiliency of the current landscape.”

“We’ve had history books about cosmic country or the post-punk grunge movement in the 90s. We’ve had biographies and memoirs of really well-known musicians like Willie Nelson,” Baranowski said. “We’ve never really had a book try to give you a snapshot of the scene today.”

“Whether you’ve been here for decades or you’re a first-time visitor planning your live music experience in Austin, there’s something in here for you to discover,” Baranowski said.

Baranowski said Thunderhouse was founded as a mission-driven media company, and every project the company does has a cause integrated into it. This is the first project from the company, and he said working with HAAM just made sense.

“How rare and how exciting that when you buy a book like this, you’re actually helping many of the artists featured in the book,” Baranowski said.

The book will hit local bookstore shelves and Amazon soon, and it’s available for purchase on the Thunderhouse website.
