AUSTIN (KXAN) – With a chance to earn their first trophy in club history, Austin FC fell just short. Nashville SC came to Central Texas and claimed the U.S. Open Cup title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Austin FC.
Austin had a flair for the dramatic throughout the tournament but couldn’t find a second goal Wednesday night, despite a sellout crowd urging them on at Q2 Stadium.
Nashville opened the scoring in the 17th minute with former MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar chopping one past Brad Stuver. The hosts put the pressure on immediately after and were able to level things at one in first half stoppage time with Myrto Uzuni finding the back of the net.
Uzuni’s goal was a moment of redemption for him after his penalty kick earlier in the first half was stopped.
The second half saw a different pace and feel. Nashville was able to settle down in the 57th minute as they earned a penalty. The visitors sent up Sam Surridge, who is one of the top goal scorers in Major League Soccer, and he connected for the eventual game winner.
With the win, Nashville SC clinches a spot in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. Austin FC will resume MLS regular season play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. as they host Saint Louis City SC.
