The city-owned utility said that it has a goal of reaching 125 megawatts of battery storage by 2027. It added that battery capacity alleviates key limitations of renewable energy generation from solar and wind.

In the release, Mayor Kirk Watson called the deal “more than an investment in infrastructure.”

“It’s a commitment to a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Austin,” Watson said. “We’re harnessing innovation, we’re strengthening reliability, supporting renewables and delivering on our promise to serve our community sustainably.”

Jupiter Power CEO Andy Bowman said the company was proud to partner with the company’s founding city.

“Austin Energy has a clear vision for the future, and as both a proud customer, with headquarters in Austin, and now partner, Jupiter couldn’t be happier to be a part of it,” he said in the release.
