Arch Manning's Heisman odds move after San Jose State win

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A win over a non-conference opponent was enough evidence for oddsmakers to boost Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning back into the top five in the Heisman Trophy race.

In the Longhorns’ home opener against San Jose State, Manning had the perfect setup for a productive outing after his disappointing performance in week one against Ohio State.

  • Garrett Nussmeier, +1000
  • Dante Moore, +1100
  • Arch Manning, +1300

Although it wasn’t the best performance, Manning’s 19-30 passing for 295 yards and five total touchdowns was a step in the right direction.

“A lot to work on, I thought it was sloppy,” Manning said after Saturday’s win.

“I think we have to own and trust the game plan,” Manning said. “Obviously, that starts on me to eliminate the pre-snap penalties and the procedural stuff, but just continue to grow and trust the game plan and once you’re out there just play ball”.

The first win of a young season didn’t change the Longhorns’ No. 7 ranking in the AP top 25 poll and unless Texas loses to UTEP, it’s hard to believe their place in the top 25 will change — barring a loss from a team in front of them in the rankings.

Two players to keep an eye on moving forward in the Heisman Trophy race are Florida quarterback DJ Lagway and former Westlake High School star, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik.

Lagway and the Gators fell to the University of South Florida 18-16. Klubnik and No. 8 Clemson struggled but squeezed out a 27-16 win against Troy University. Both players fell out of the top tier of the odds.
