AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is planning to hold a news conference Friday to release more material in the shooting involving an officer on Azie Morton Road, per a news release from the agency. This comes after APD identified the suspect Thursday as 30-year-old Brandon Thompson.
Thompson was charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer and burglary of a residence, both first degree felonies. Police said he was in custody at the hospital Thursday.
Thompson was booked on a $500,000 bond for the capital murder charge and $100,000 for the burglary charge, an APD source told KXAN Thursday.
The news conference will happen at 12:30 p.m. at APD Headquarters downtown.
The officer involved in the shooting was identified as Senior Police Office Adam Reinhart. He has six year and two months of service with APD. Davis said in a news conference Wednesday that Reinhart was expected to survive.
This all comes after Reinhart and a woman were shot early Wednesday morning near the 700 block of Azie Morton Road, APD Police Chief Lisa Davis said Wednesday.
It all began when an officer, later identified as Reinhart, was patrolling Zilker Park and found a vehicle that was reported stolen, according to police. A short time later is when a police said Thompson and a woman emerged from the trees.
Thompson then allegedly shot the woman in the head and then opened fire at Reinhart. Thompson then ran away prompting a manhunt from APD to find him. He was taken into custody after another shooting at a south Austin home, hours after the original incident, according to police. Davis said a homeowner shot Thompson after he ran inside a home as he attempted to escape police.
According to online court records, Thompson has two previous Travis County Jail sentences, as well as several previous arrests. A source with APD confirmed with KXAN Thursday that Thompson is experiencing homelessness.
