AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police said a driver suffered a gunshot wound to the neck after being pursued by an officer who witnessed a drive-by shooting. APD confirmed Sunday that one person has been detained and charged with deadly conduct.
Austin PD said they were not able to release information about the person being charged; if they were the same person who was shot during the incident.
It happened near North Creek Drive and East Rundberg Lane just before 1 a.m. Sunday.
Austin Chief of Police Lisa Davis said it started when an officer said they witnessed a drive-by shooting. The officer followed a vehicle to Parkfield Drive, APD Chief Lisa Davis said during an early-morning press briefing.
As the vehicle was turning right on Parkfield, the officer exited his vehicle, gave commands and a warning before opening fire. Davis said the vehicle continued to drive away.
The vehicle was later found parked on a side street. The person inside had a gunshot wound in their neck.
Chief Davis said it was not clear if the gunshot was from the officer’s service weapon. A firearm was found inside the vehicle, Davis said.
The officer was being interviewed as part of an officer-involved shooting investigation.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
