AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man died after police said he “collapsed” outside the Menchaca Road Branch Library Thursday morning, the Austin Police Department confirmed to KXAN in an email.
Around 9 a.m., APD officers responded to the library, which is located at 5500 Menchaca Road in south Austin, for a check welfare urgent call, police said.
KXAN reached out to the city of Austin for a statement, and a spokesperson said in part an “Austin Public Library employee observed an individual collapse in the driveway outside of the Menchaca Road Branch Library as the library was opening.”
When officers arrived, they “found a man who was not breathing on the ground outside of the library,” according to police.
“APL staff immediately called 9-1-1 and attempted to resuscitate the man, who was unresponsive,” the city statement said.
Austin-Travis County EMS and the Austin Fire Department responded and “attempted life-saving measures.” However, the man was pronounced dead at 9:47 a.m., according to police.
“Officers interviewed witnesses and initial investigation shows that the male was walking when he collapsed,” police said.
The city said the library was temporarily closed to the public, and customers were asked to leave so that APD could conduct its investigation. However, a spokesperson for the city said the library reopened to the public around 2 p.m.
According to APD, the death is not being investigated as a homicide, and there was no foul play suspected. Additionally, police said the cause of death will be determined by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The investigation remained ongoing Thursday, and no other details were released.
