AUSTIN (KXAN) — Many parents are keeping a close eye on Austin Independent School District’s consolidation process.
“Right now we are in phase two the analysis and refinement phase,” said Christine Steenport, AISD Operations Officer, during a virtual meeting this week.
The district hopes to present a draft plan outlining specific school consolidations by Oct. 9.
“What is that going to look like for staff, what is that going to look like for families? What is that going to look like for communities?” said Steenport during that same virtual meeting.
AISD’s plans have not been met with open arms though.
“I have concerns about tearing a community apart,” said Becker Elementary parent Adriana Vizcarrondo.
While no specific school closures have been announced many parents at Becker Elementary School are worried.
AISD posted online that wall to wall dual language programs could be moved.
“We plan to move programs closer to where most emergent bilingual students live. Students already in the programs will still have access, just at a different school,” read the post online.
“I was on the Zoom call yesterday that was done by the district and we were one of the four schools that were named for the wall to wall for possible consolidation,” said Becker Parent, Janny Sersen.
Parents KXAN spoke with said they plan to continue making their voices heard about the possibility of closures.
Some parents even saying that if Becker were to close, they might leave the district.
“I think a lot of people would leave AISD,” said Vizcarrondo.
