AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Independent School District superintendent said students and families should expect to see the district’s first draft plan on school consolidations and boundary changes Friday.
While this impending change has caused anxiety for some parents for months, Matias Segura said letters will be released to “every single student in AISD or families of those students in Austin ISD detailing what can be expected in this draft plan.”
In a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, Segura explained why the district is releasing these details at 5:30 p.m.
“I know 5:30 on a Friday isn’t the best time to receive information like this, but let me be clear that it’s very very intentional,” Segura said. “We wanted to make sure that we created a space to engage with our principles and have these conversations one on one so that they can have a conversation with their staff at their campus at the end of the day on Friday.”
But what should parents expect coming Friday?
The post said the letter will point out districtwide overviews such as closures and boundary updates. You will also see a campus-by-campus detail and an interactive “What’s my school?” tool.
Austin ISD’s draft outline comes months after data revealed that declining enrollment numbers are leaving “too many schools under capacity, ” a KXAN previous report said.
In August, the district shared data showing the campuses with the highest number of open seats, and set a goal of having all campuses reach at least 85% enrollment by the 2026-27 school year.
AISD encourages students and parents affected to “spend time with the plan” in order to provide feedback.
The district added that feedback over the next five weeks will help refine the plan ahead of the school board’s final vote on November 20.
