President Donald Trump will address farmers and ranchers at the annual American Farm Bureau Federation conference at the Austin Convention Center this evening. The visit comes on the heels of two big trade movements last week – a thawing of a dispute with China and a replacement agreement for NAFTA approved by the Senate.
His audience, many of whom have been stuck in the middle of those disputes, may give him a warm reception. He is also expected to announce a rollback of environmental protections for wetlands and streams under the Clean Water Act, a move supported by the AFBF.
Trump signed the deal with China on Wednesday, two years after his administration placed tariffs on some Chinese imports, spurring China to put a 170% tariff on sorghum as a countermove. The country had imported more than two-thirds of the crop before the dispute.
While it’s unclear if farmers will see immediate relief after the recent action, trade will likely be on the minds of many farmers at the convention.
Trump’s visit comes just two days before his impeachment trial is set to begin in the Senate.
